Valuation Surveys

NIMA Marine provides professional Valuation Surveys for yachts and small craft throughout Southern Ontario.

Whether for financing, estate planning, taxation, donation, legal proceedings, or personal knowledge, a Valuation Survey provides an independent assessment of a vessel’s value.

What is a Valuation Survey?

A Valuation Survey is conducted to determine the current value of a yacht, boat, or other small craft.

Unlike condition-based surveys, the primary purpose of a valuation survey is to establish a supportable opinion of value based on the vessel’s characteristics, condition, equipment, market data, and comparable sales information.

The resulting report provides a documented valuation that may be used for financial, legal, insurance, or ownership-related purposes.

Common Reasons for a Valuation Survey

How Value is Determined

A professional valuation considers a range of factors that may influence the market value of a vessel.

What's Included

  • Vessel identification and specifications
  • Review of relevant vessel information
  • Visual inspection (where required)
  • Equipment inventory review
  • Market research and comparable sales analysis
  • Professional opinion of value
  • Supporting valuation rationale
  • Written valuation report

Understanding Different Types of Value

Depending on the purpose of the survey, different valuation methodologies may be appropriate.

Fair Market Value

The estimated price a willing buyer and willing seller would agree upon in an open and competitive market.

Replacement Cost

The estimated cost to replace a vessel with one of similar type, specification, and utility.

Other Valuation Bases

Specific circumstances such as legal proceedings, taxation matters, or insurance requirements may require alternative valuation approaches.
